Teach For America

Teach For America (TFA) is an American nonprofit organization that recruits and trains college graduates and professionals to teach in underserved communities. The organization aims to address educational inequity by placing corps members in low-income schools for at least two years, where they work to improve student outcomes and advocate for systemic change.

Teach For America was founded in 1989 by Wendy Kopp as part of her senior thesis at Princeton University. It launched in 1990 with an initial cohort of 500 teachers and has since expanded nationwide, partnering with school districts to place thousands of educators in classrooms. TFA alumni often continue working in education, policy, and social impact roles, contributing to broader efforts to reform and improve the U.S. education system.
